Carpet Cleaning Tips for Busy Parents

A busy family life can make keeping your home clean difficult, and this is especially the case with carpets. Children running around the house, food getting dropped and keeping pets are just some of the factors that can affect the cleanliness of your floor covering.

However, it is possible to keep your carpet clean in spite of day-to-day life. Bill Weir of Aquatec carpet cleaning  shares some practical tips for busy parents on how to do this:

1. Vacuum regularly
Prevention is better than cure and one of the simplest ways to prevent permanent damage to your carpets is to vacuum them on a regular basis. This will remove settled dust, pet hairs and any debris caused by the general activities of your family.

2. Take care of stains
Any accidents that could potentially cause stains should be dealt with promptly. A common mistake is to scrub hard at the offending mark, but it is much better to place a cloth over the stain with a heavy object holding it down. This will absorb any moisture in the stain and make it much easier to remove.

Different stains can be removed using different cleaning products or substances from around the home. For example, a solution of lemon juice and salt is great for removing mould and mildew stains from a carpet. It is important to make sure you are using the right products to effectively remove each type of stain.

3. Using cleaning solutions
Try to use the mildest possible cleaning solution for carpet cleaning. Also, you should make sure you follow the instructions given by the manufacturer to avoid encountering any problems. For small spills, you will not usually need to use a cleaning solution at all. Water alone – or water mixed with a little vinegar – is generally sufficient to solve the problem.

4. Use entrance mats
Most of the staining or wear and tear to your carpets is as a result of people walking over them in shoes they have worn outside. Allowing this will mean that a number of different substances can potentially come into contact with your carpet, including soil, dust, grease, starch and oil.

To reduce the amount of each of these substances touching your carpets, use entrance mats directly next to the door. Entrance mats must be cleaned regularly to remove the dirt that has built up. If entrance mats are not cleaned, you will just pick up dirt from the mats that is then deposited on your carpets. An external mat is also a good idea, but nothing works better than asking guests to remove their shoes altogether.

5. Steam cleaning
At the very least, your carpet should be steam cleaned every six months to a year. Not only will this remove dirt and bacteria, it will also kill off any carpet bugs that may be lurking in the fibres. You can buy your own steam cleaner or you can hire the services of a professional carpet cleaning company to do the job for you. Opting for the latter will save you a lot of time and guarantee you the highest quality of finish.

6. Don’t apply heat
People often mistakenly believe that applying heat to a stain will help to remove the blemish more thoroughly and dry the offending area quicker. However, it can actually cause a stain to set and may leave a permanent mark.
With the appropriate care and maintenance, you can keep your carpets clean and fresh for many years, even if your busy family life means there are regular spills. Taking preventive measures such as using entrance mats and treating stains promptly will help to keep your carpet looking as good as new for many years to come.
